Texas Leadership Forum held a very successful Reunion Reception on July 24. It was great to see students from our first 2007 class sharing their ideas with the students in our incoming class of 2012.

We were fortunate to have board members Florencia Fortner and Bill Slicker in attendance as well as DISD Board of Trustee Mike Morath.  Florencia talked to the students about the importance of staying connected with each other and TLF and the role networking now plays in our lives.

Gary Griffith stressed the importance that once a TLF member always a TLF member and the expectation that these young adults would continue to be active and involved in their communities and TLF.

Washington, DC – U.S. Congressman Pete Sessions (R-Dallas) joined Today Foundation President Gary Griffith in congratulating North Texas students who participated in the Today Foundation’s Texas Leadership Forum (TLF) this year, which included a conference in Washington, DC from June 17 – June 23, 2012.

TLF’s one-week conference in the nation’s capital provided participants with a unique, inside view of federal government operations. This year’s participants included 17 select students chosen based upon academic performance, community involvement and leadership ability. Application requirements for TLF participants include a résumé, two one-page essays and a letter of recommendation by a teacher, principal, counselor or community leader. In addition to the Washington, DC conference, TLF students attend local forum meetings, visit with state officials in Austin, and complete projects and writing assignments.

“The Texas Leadership Forum is an exceptional program that gives talented students the opportunity to consider, challenge and thoughtfully articulate the current policy debates facing our nation,” said Sessions, who is the honorary chair of TLF. “All TLF participants have proven their commitment to learning and contributing to their communities, and I believe their visit to Washington will help further develop their leadership skills for service in the future.”

The TLF conference events included educational tours and meetings at the Capitol, Pentagon, U.S. State Department, Interpol, Arlington National Cemetery, the Newseum, and the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office (TECRO). During the week, students observed House committee hearings and attended a private speaking forum featuring several Washington leaders, including Congressman Kevin Brady (TX-08), Congressman Greg Walden (OR-02) and Colonel Jason Bohm of the United States Marines.
